Description

Salmon Katsu is a Japanese-inspired dish where salmon fillets are coated in panko breadcrumbs and fried to golden perfection. Paired with a tangy tonkatsu sauce or a refreshing dipping sauce, it’s a restaurant-quality meal you can make at home.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 salmon fillets (about 6 oz each, skin removed)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika (optional)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

For the Dipping Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup tonkatsu sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise (optional, for creamy dipping sauce)

Optional Garnish:

  • Lemon wedges
  • Chopped parsley or green onions

Instructions

  1. Prepare the salmon: Pat the salmon fillets dry with a paper towel. Season both sides with salt and black pepper.

  2. Set up the breading station:

    • Place the flour in a shallow dish.
    • In a second dish, beat the eggs.
    • In a third dish, combine the panko breadcrumbs with garlic powder and paprika (if using).
  3. Bread the salmon: Dredge each salmon fillet in the flour, shaking off any excess. Dip it into the beaten eggs, ensuring it’s fully coated, then press it into the panko breadcrumbs, covering all sides.

  4. Heat the oil: Pour about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil into a large skillet and heat over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  5. Fry the salmon: Carefully place the breaded salmon fillets into the hot oil. Fry for 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. The internal temperature of the salmon should reach 145°F (63°C).

  6. Drain and rest: Transfer the salmon to a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.

  7. Serve: Plate the salmon katsu with lemon wedges and garnish with parsley or green onions. Serve alongside tonkatsu sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • Baking Option: For a healthier version, bake the breaded salmon fillets at 400°F (200°C) for 12-15 minutes, flipping halfway through, until crispy.
  • Air Fryer Option: Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 10-12 minutes, spraying lightly with oil, until golden and cooked through.
  • Toppings: Add a drizzle of spicy mayo or unagi sauce for an extra layer of flavor.
  • Side Dishes: Serve with steamed rice, shredded cabbage, or a fresh cucumber salad for a complete meal.
