Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

For the Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 24 tablespoons heavy cream (for desired consistency)
  • A pinch of salt

For Decoration:

  • Edible flowers (e.g., pansies, violets, marigolds)
  • Sprinkles or colored sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with milk. Start and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until smooth.
  6. Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans and smooth the tops.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from the pans and transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  9. While the cakes are cooling, prepare the frosting by beating together the butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Add heavy cream one tablespoon at a time until the frosting reaches your desired consistency.
  10. Once the cakes are completely cooled, spread a layer of frosting on top of the first cake layer. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the entire cake.
  11. Decorate with edible flowers, pressing them gently into the frosting. Optionally, sprinkle with colored sugar or sprinkles for an extra pop of color.
