Ingredients
Scale
For the Cake:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
For the Frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2–4 tablespoons heavy cream (for desired consistency)
- A pinch of salt
For Decoration:
- Edible flowers (e.g., pansies, violets, marigolds)
- Sprinkles or colored sugar (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with milk. Start and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until smooth.
- Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans and smooth the tops.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from the pans and transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
- While the cakes are cooling, prepare the frosting by beating together the butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Add heavy cream one tablespoon at a time until the frosting reaches your desired consistency.
- Once the cakes are completely cooled, spread a layer of frosting on top of the first cake layer. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the entire cake.
- Decorate with edible flowers, pressing them gently into the frosting. Optionally, sprinkle with colored sugar or sprinkles for an extra pop of color.
Notes
- Be sure to use edible flowers that are safe for consumption. Avoid flowers that have been treated with pesticides.
- You can use a store-bought frosting for convenience or a different flavor like cream cheese frosting if preferred.
- This cake is perfect for birthday parties, celebrations, or any special occasion.
